The third ring lands perfectly. The carnie blinks, then grunts, reaching for the smallest stuffed animal….a sad-looking rabbit with one eye sewn crooked. I don’t want it. I don’t want anything from this place except to leave. But I take the rabbit anyway, clutching it to my chest like a shield as I turn, and there he is.

The hallway erupts with laughter. Red and green goo drips down my hair and slides into my collar. My white shirt clings to my body, dyed and drenched and disgusting. “Hey Sandy, clean up your mess!” “Try not to stain the floors with your loser slime!” Another balloon hits me, this one in the back. Blue slime now joins the party, soaking my clothes and my pride. I bite the inside of my cheek and bend down to gather my books. Biology first. Then chemistry. Poetry. All soaked. All ruined.

Blood smears across the carpet, dark streaks that'll never come out. Good thing this place sees worse things than murder. The bathtub is barely big enough, but I manage to fold him inside. His head lolls at an unnatural angle. I turn away, focusing on the next step. Bleach. Lots of it. The motel's supply closet is a joke—just cleaning rags and half-empty bottles. But there's enough bleach to burn away DNA. I pour it over everything: the carpet, the walls, the doorknobs. The chemical smell makes my eyes water.

It was so small that it could be used as a key chain. “Let’s go shopping!” Caleb answered with enthusiasm. But Bea still had her eyes on the thing that Callum gave her. What was that for? “Sure. Let’s shop for clothes. We should buy everything we want today.” Callum urged his son who already started walking outside the arcade. “What is this for?” Bea asked while still looking at the stuffed toy. She started walking, following the two. “That is for you. Isn’t it obvious?” Callum said as he put his hands in his pockets, his eyes following his son who was walking ahead.

Small, cluttered, the window display filled with wooden toys and glass figurines and a row of stuffed animals in various states of faded glory. Cleo stopped. She stared at the teddy bear in the window. Brown, round-bellied, with a stitched smile and a red ribbon around its neck. Her reflection overlapped with the bear's face in the glass. "Do you want it?" I asked. Cleo shook her head. Quick. Practiced. "I already have one." I hadn't seen a teddy bear at their house. Just the one rabbit with the fraying ear, the one Cleo dragged everywhere and Vera stitched back together every few weeks.

Lastly, a pink stuffed panda toy with a white heart on the chest got grabbed and pulled out by Julie.
