I waited until Jackson was asleep that night before I slipped out of bed and I grabbed the bag from the apothecary and I took it down to the kitchen. I pulled out all of the ingredients and I made a tea with it that I had to drink, which I did while I was packing all of the ingredients away again.

He pours an amber liquid from a small pot, the aroma rising with the steam—herbs, honey, something else I can't identify. "Tea?" I ask, accepting the offered mug. "My own blend." His voice remains low, almost intimate in the quiet hall. "Valerian root, chamomile, lavender. A touch of dragon's breath herb that grows only in the Hidden Bowl." A pause, then something I never expected—a small admission of vulnerability. "It helps quiet my thoughts when duty weighs too heavily." I cradle the mug between my palms, letting its warmth seep into my hands. "And does duty weigh heavily tonight?"

The deep amber liquid caught the warm light through the glass, blending evening primrose, silverleaf thyme, and a guiding herb I had blended myself. "Here are the tinctures for that patient. Three times a day for a week. The dosage is on the jars." Theodore looked at the labels, his eyes widening. "You can't buy this stuff anywhere, Evelyn."

I close my eyes, relived and glance up at Pastor. "It is an ancient herbal and spice tea made with holy water." Pastor takes a seat on the pew next to me. "It's helping-thank you." I say as my mind goes back to what he said earlier. "What did you mean by, it was the plan?"

A scent clearly more floral with a touch of apple that had Alexander’s brow lift. “You’re making another brew?” he asked, looking from Parsul’s own set that looked to have plenty left for him to take instead of the added task. But the maid nodded. Her severe bun shifted just slightly in the gesture before she rose to her full and perfect stature. “Yes, Your Majesty,” the maid answered dutifully, eyes lowered. “My Lady Belinda sent it over with explicit instructions. Her Majesty Parsul is to drink the tea—and only her. It is medicinal. Expensive.”

The content of the first box made me gasp, and the second had me fanning myself because the room suddenly got hot seeing those presents. The first box contained a backless lavender dress, with a slit that stopped right at my thigh. The second box contained black Saint Laurent heels and a purse to match. The content of the last box was a beauty to behold. It was the latest edition of the Bulgari necklace. I was gobsmacked by this gift.

Grandma Rosie came bustling in moments later with an overflowing tray. It was stacked high with biscuits and mugs, and there was a huge patterned teapot in its centre. She wobbled beneath its weight, and Skye leapt up to steady her. “Thank you, dear,” she muttered, patting his arm as he took it from her. “It’s a herbal blend, of course – basil, black pepper, rosemary, dill – oh! "What is this?" She speaks while coming to my direction and her gaze is all over my body. "This is blessed water." "Blessed water?" She says while coming towards me. "No, no don't touch it-" But before I could warn her, she did what I was telling her not to. I hear her scream the other second and she falls across the room.
