It has an ornate metal clasp on the front which locks the pages giving the illusion of it being a box. I run my fingers over the clasp and it clicks open. Symbols and sigils filled the pages, each one drawn in dark ink—or blood. Words I recognized from forbidden texts. Blood magic. I turned the pages, faster and faster, my eyes drinking in the madness. Experiments, incantations, diagrams of bodies cut open. But it wasn’t until I reached the center of the journal that my blood ran cold.

He was completely insufferable. This was problematic. Him allowing me to feed from him could create a blood bond. I chose not to take blood from others for this very reason. I did not need to be connected to anyone in that way. The bond was mainly utilized by vampires who used certain humans for their blood source so they could maintain a connection and keep tabs on them. The blood had to be taken from the source, though, from the vein. So blood poured into a cup or spilled over did not count.
