She removed the lid and inside it sat a gold chain with blue sapphire pendant—a rarity on earth. Her eyes flashed bright and she picked it up. Oval in shape, the pendant must be easily ten carats. It shone brilliant in the lights of the candles. “It’s beautiful,” she breathed. “May I have the honor of draping it across your neck?” he asked hopeful as hell.

“It should be here…” Then she paused. Her brow furrowed. “There’s an inscription.” I followed her, and as she stepped back, the faint outline of a crescent moon shimmered on the surface. Beneath it, ancient symbols I couldn’t read. “What does it say?” I asked. She traced it with one finger. “Only fire born of blood may wake the gate.” I stared at the pendant resting against my chest.
