The following week was a study in atmospheric pressure. The air in the house didn't just feel heavy; it felt viscous, like walking through chest-deep water. Laredo was a ghost that haunted the hallways, a silent, impeccably dressed spectre who communicated in lingering glances and the occasional, heavy-handed brush of his shoulder against mine in the corridor.

She tried to concentrate enough to will the sky to return to its previous state, but to her astonishment, it only darkened even further. "What's going on?" Adea muttered to herself. She soon realized the water felt thicker than before. She turned her head over to look at the water. It was almost too dark to see clearly, but the substance in which she lied had become thick and dark in color like maroon. At first, Adea thought it was merely reflecting the obscure light of the heavens above her, but it did not take long to realize the horrifying truth: the water had turned to blood.

Her sheer will to live was the only thing that was keeping her heart beating. “Why don’t you just give up? Hm, Luntian?” Ursula taunted with a smile as she lifted her bloody fingers. With a swift and unforgiving motion, she pierced the side of Luntian’s throat again. Rendering a pained groan from the old Shaman. “Die, and be free from your misery, my sister.” Luntian closed her eyes. Trying to focus and concentrate. Remembering how beings are created. The flesh. The blood. Focus, concentrate. What is blood? Blood is water? The Water and the Blood.

“That he stole your mate – Damian and Roger’s mother. I don’t want to belong to his bloodline.” Edward clucks and brushes my hair back from my face. “None of us can change where we come from, Gloria.” He states softly. “But your upbringing taught you a lesson most of us don’t learn until much later in life: the family you choose can be a thousand times better than the one you were born into. Blood may be thicker than water – but so are a lot of things… mayonnaise, frosting, gravy…”

And I know, with a certainty that chills deeper than the wind, that the next wave to hit us won’t be made of water. It will be made of blood.
