I heard the quiet clack of the dishwasher door closing, followed by the sound of water running in the sink.
A couple of minutes later, he returned carrying a tall glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and a small ceramic plate featuring neatly sliced, crisp red apples. He set the glass on the coaster beside me and sat back down, stretching his long arm across the back of the couch behind my head.
I looked at the plate of apples on the table, then sank deeper into the cushions with a heavy, dramatic sigh.
