Chapter 2 – I Will Make You Feel This Ana The market smelled intensely of ripe apples mixed with something metallic and sharp—my own blood. I quickly wiped my nose with the back of my hand, hoping the movement went unnoticed, but the stinging sensation beneath my skin confirmed the cut was still open. I clutched the few coins I had managed to earn from scrubbing floors all week. My stomach gnawed with hunger. I just needed a single apple. Or perhaps a bruised peach. Anything at all to stop the empty, twisting pain inside me.

The way her words stumbled when she tried to hide something. I’d seen it before, years ago, when she was younger, when she lied about sneaking out with Agatha. When she tried to cover up the bruise on her wrist after falling off her bike. But this was different. Bigger. I had an idea what it was. And the thought of it made my chest tighten in a way no battlefield ever had. “She’s tangled in this mess already,” my second-in-command muttered across the table, snapping me back to the present.

Alessio’s Pov “What the hell are you talking about?” I snapped, confused as hell by Raven’s sudden interruption. She didn’t answer. Just pointed, at me. I raised my hand, brushed the underside of my nose. It was warm and wet. Blood. I stared at the red smear on my fingertips, my pulse picking up immediately. “What the fuck—?” I turned sharply to Valerius. “What is the meaning of this?” Diego and the rest of my pack were already rising to their feet. Chairs scraped violently across the stone floor. Raven stood too, her dagger already slipping into her hand like second nature.

After Vander came to find out, he believed the culprit was half-blood—the owner of the werewolf and witch blood. The Appalachia Kingdom received a shipment from him of tens of gallons of rare animal blood. General Nehan was found battered on the edge of the Appalachia Forest. They believe the culprit is also a half-blood—a vampire and a witch. Jimmy is found dying on the edge of the Redwood Forest. Lucian thought as he picked the spoiled apple to dump it in the trash can. “I am sorry. There are many people who spend days without food and I am throwing you away,” Lucian whispered remembering the days he spent rummaging through garbage bins for half-eaten sandwiches. To his surprise, a faint green glow lit his hand as the fruit revived itself and looked as if it was freshly collected from the tree. Lucian gasped placing the apple on the kitchen counter and examined his hand.

I ran to it not caring about my broken ribs and I smiled. "One of this apples had been eaten six times" I thought and started searching for the eaten apples. Searching for the eaten apple took longer than my expectation but I finally found it when I was thirty seconds away I smiled at the red delicious apple and took a bite out of it. "Welcome back" I heard someone said and I scanned my environment instantly. Sabrina smiled at me and started turning off the candles "Congratulations your highness" she smiled and bowed "Thank you" I said and tried to get up "Oh my God!" I gritted out and touched my ribs

The doctor came in to check on me three different times, and Alan still didn't show up. Right before I went to sleep, I glanced at my phone one last time and saw Larissa Fennimore's new post on her social feed. [Every time I get hurt, my knight in shining armor shows up. I'm so lucky!] The picture under it was a shot of Alan putting a bandage on her. Larissa's profile picture was a yellow mango. It was pretty, but it made me sick.

She watched in dismay as the bruises spread across the surface of the fruit, until the entire thing became dried and shriveled in her hand. She dropped the rotten apple to ground and quickly wiped her hand on her jean shorts.
