Then I smelled her. Fear, blood, and familiar warmth.
“Betty,” I breathed.
I followed the scent to a crude cage near the ravine wall. The door hung open, splintered by claws. Inside, Betty lay crumpled against the bars, breathing shallow, blood soaking her dress.
“No,” I whispered, dropping to my knees beside her. Her eyes fluttered open at the sound of my voice. “Alpha… Jaron?”
“I am here,” I said hoarsely, lifting her into my arms. She was light, too light, and ice-cold to the touch. “You are safe now.”
