The Wolf's Game
Dax screams from behind me; whether it’s him or the shadow, I can’t tell.
A vine slices past my cheek, and another coils around my wrist, but I wrench free before it can pierce my skin.
The pedestal rises before me. The heartbloom pulses, brighter and brighter, casting the whole clearing in crimson light.
I reach out, and Dax roars behind me. The pedestal shudders. The garden howls. My fingers brush the stem, and the world erupts.
Light detonates outward, hurling Dax backward into a wall of thorns. He vanishes in a burst of shadow; not dead, not consumed, just gone, pulled out of the garden like a piece yanked off a board.
