He flinched slightly, but didn’t show it for long. Then... there came a heavy knock on the door. Before I even processed it, the door swung open again on its own. I nearly fainted at the sight before me. “Kyra…” Norway slipped inside like a serpent—and, like the one who owns the entire fortress, tall and calm and infuriatingly elegant. And right behind him? Another group of servants carrying… “Are those… roses?” I croaked. “Black roses specifically,” he corrected, smiling warmly. “They are very rare, and royal. They bloom only where sacred bloodlines are blessed.”

She sent Ethan an article about the Higashiyama district in October, which Ethan forwarded to Valentina with one word: obvious. Valentina books Japan in March. Not the birthday — Rosa's birthday is the twentieth and Japan is in May, when the late spring light is doing what May light does in Kyoto, and the Higashiyama district is at the particular quality it has between the cherry blossoms and the summer heat. Two weeks. Valentina, Ethan, Clara, Rosa, Pep. Five people in a country that Pep knows and Valentina has been to, and Rosa has been circling for a year.

She loves flowers. The stem of flower is very thick I take out my knife from basket and try to cut it. I cut the stem and as I go to put it my basket I hear a snap of twig breaking nearby. Thinking it were guards I stand up to confront them with flowers in one hand and knife in another and basket near my feet. But it wasn't father's guards it was a big black wild boar. I stay still as boar stands there, a little movement and I will become his focus for anger.

Her voice was too smooth. I looked at the chest. “What’s inside?” I asked. “A charm for protection, Princess.” She answered. I felt Roses stir at my hip, wrapped against me in her sling. Her tiny fists clenched as if she knew something I didn’t. A faint glow around my neck gave a faint pulse, like a heartbeat answering hers. I was told it was a pearl and it could pulse anywhere in my body. Mara stepped forward. Too close. And then, Roses cried. Not a soft whimper but a shrill, panicked scream. The pearl flared, white-hot light spilling from it, so bright Mara hissed and dropped the chest.

She’s sitting at her desk with her laptop open, looking worried and tired like she didn’t sleep well either. “I’ve been thinking about that letter all night,” I tell her as I get out of bed. “Me too,” Cassie replies without looking away from her computer screen. “Actually, I stayed up late doing some research about black roses.” “What did you find out?” I ask, though I’m not sure I really want to know. Cassie turns to face me with a serious expression. “Black roses have a really dark symbolic meaning. They usually represent death, endings, or revenge. Sometimes they’re used to threaten someone or to say that something bad is going to happen to them.”

Blood roses. Rafael’s hand tightened around the fragile flower, crushing it slowly between his fingers. A symbol. A secret. Not grief. Not loss. Love. Defiance. War. His lips curled into a dangerous smile. "So," he said softly, almost lovingly. "The game has only just begun." He tossed the crushed rose onto the floor, grinding it under his boot. "Bring me Matteo," Rafael ordered, his voice sharp as a whip. "And this time... bring the girl too."

A white rose lay on the floor dripping with blood. A small, shiny blade lay beside it. A beautiful object in such a terrible and painful condition. The blood stain on it did not hide it's immaculate and beautiful nature. She puffed smoke in the air and took a sip of the liquor beside her, as she glared at the bleeding rose with sad and anguish filled eyes, it told a lot about her and her agony. She was as beautiful as the rose in front of her.

But they’ll get over it once it’s done. I throw on real clothes, grab my room key, and head out. The beach is nearly empty, moonlight barely lighting the rocky coastline. I move toward a large outcropping, where I’d seen movement. I summon a spell—black and purple energy sparking between my palms. But when I round the rocks and step into view— They’re already dead. Roweena. Iona. The Red One. Laid out on the sand. Clouded eyes. Blood pooling beneath them. Chests torn open, hearts missing.

Such an inspiration, she is. I quickly showered and wore a simple dress to start the day. . . . "My legs are killing me. Remind me never to go shopping with you, Ann", I groaned, as we entered the cafe BlossomBee. It was a homely place with a bunch of dandelions on each table. A delicious scent of coffee and muffins lingered in the air instantly making me relaxed. We ordered cinnamon rolls, pancakes, and blueberry muffins for brunch. The ambiance helped me become more cheery from a semi-querulous phase.

It wasn’t earth. It was bone. Ancient bone. The ribs of something divine. Clara shuddered violently. “Guys… this isn’t a chamber.” Ares exhaled hollowly. “We’re inside her.” I didn’t want that to be true, but the air tasted like moonlight and old power. Like the beginning of everything. The ground beneath us lit up in a slow ripple silver first, then black, then a soft violet hue that made Clara’s storm surge in response.
