And when he ran it slowly around my nipple, I felt something that made me arch my back and grab his hair. Bumps. Small ones, along the entire length of his tongue. Like ridges. Like beads. Each one scraped against my skin in a different way, creating layers of sensation that my brain couldn’t process. “Mortyss…” I moaned, looking down. “Your tongue…” He raised his eyes to me without taking his mouth off my breast. His violet eyes were brighter than ever. And then, deliberately, he showed me his tongue. It was purple. Forked at the tip, like a snake’s. And along its entire length, rows of small bumps pulsed, each one the size of a tiny pea, glistening with a moisture that wasn’t human saliva.

Why…just why…did I forget that I am not supposed to forget anything? It was my fault. The tips of my fingers tingle. The surge of strange energy pulses under my skin. As I look down at my arms, I find my veins glowing blue. Instead of getting surprised, I find myself staring at them until the color becomes brighter.

I placed one hand on the mid column of my neck trying to stop the uncomfortable feeling. I looked at my reflection on the mirror of the dresser opposite to my bed. My skin turned paler than a white paper. Blue veins were prominent . My irises were deep crimson red. My canines extended not in wolf teeth but vampire's. It had been a long time since I had blood.

So why am I feeling so drained, and why does my arm throb? I pull up the soaked sleeve to inspect the area that is giving me issues and gasp out loud when I see not just a mass of dark bruising, but my veins are a deep hue of purple and angry looking. My throat goes dry when I see a small hole, no bigger than a needle, but bright red, sitting in the center of the bruising and discolored veins. What did they do to me? It’s the logical question, the only one that comes to mind. They, whoever it was that attacked me, must have caused this.

And veins. God, he has so many veins, running just under his skin. One of them goes down his taut neck. It bumps over his collarbone and then disappears beneath his muscled pecs. His chest was massive and the curves of it make a tight valley that then changes into the ridges of his abdomen. I go to count those ridges and I was pretty sure that he’s got a six-pack. Could be eight too.

The whispers grow louder until I can catch snippets of words. “...don’t…at me.” Huh? “I can’t hear you.” I say. “Cou—” He raises his head. And my tongue turns into a five-ton rock inside of my mouth as my eyes meet his. His eyes, which had been completely dark brown earlier, are tinged with a sickly hue of blue. His cheeks are the color of dead ash. I see the veins underneath, paths of thick blue twisting across his skin. Holy shit. “Don’t look at me like that.”

I growled, cutting him off without looking up. I sat on the edge of the mattress, my broad knee pressing into the side of the bed as I gently turned Lilith onto her side. I reached down, my thumb carefully pulling back the collar of her damp tunic to expose her left shoulder. There it was. The nexus of the Blood-Seal; a hideous, raised knot of pitch-black veins that pulsed with a faint, troubling purple light, looking like rotten roots buried deep beneath her skin.

My dad had suddenly gotten all worked up as his cheeks were turning red and his veins popping out or becoming visible. He was trying to keep it a secret and no one was going to know unless it was revealed. My tongue swirled inside my mouth at the realisation of this and I couldn't help but snort at his reaction. "Thump.. thump.. thump" that's your heartbeat now right?" I scoffed as I went closer to him with my eyes dipped into his with a malicious smirk curling up on my lips. Now I knew what I could use against him, now I was sure about what to do to make him beg me.

She saw all the veins in his neck stand out like thick cords as he held on. “I’ve got you,” he said through clenched teeth. “Don’t…don’t look down.” June’s curiosity got the better of her. She looked anyway. The entire ocean floor was visible under the swirling water—and there, rising out of the black sand, was another tree, made from blue glass.

“Yours will.” He lifts my wrist to his mouth. Kisses the vein. I feel his cold lips trace the blue line from my wrist toward my elbow, his tongue tasting my pulse at various points, choosing. He settles on the spot where my pulse is strongest – the inside of my wrist where the skin is thin and the vein is close. He bites. The venom enters my bloodstream at the wrist and I track its journey – up my forearm, through my bicep, across my shoulder, into my chest. One second. Two. It reaches my heart.
