All I could see was her. She was a wreck. Blood crusted under her nose. A long gash torn down her side where the beast’s claws had caught her. Her face was gray and sunken, her lips cracked. And her arm… I pulled back her torn sleeve and my heart stopped. The black veins. I’d heard about them. I’d seen them on the dying at the gates. But I’d never seen them on her, and the sight of them tore something open in me. They’d spread far past her wrist, past her elbow, climbing up over her shoulder, dark and thick and pulsing faintly under her skin like something alive.

Black veins spread beneath the skin of his neck like spilled ink. His eyes lifted toward Lyra— And one of them had turned completely silver.

No matter what, he’s the last person I’m meant to consider attractive. I grabbed his arm to cover it up with the blanket but I paused abruptly noticing this weird color on the vein in his hand. I thought veins were usually green in color, why was his purple? Drawing my attention back to his face, I noticed how pale he was for real and I moved to the other side of the bed to check out his other arm, and the veins in his hand were purple as well. “Oh my God” I gasped, dropping his arm out of shock and covering my mouth. I moved close, reaching for his face and opening his eyes and the veins in his eyes were purple as well, and that was when I knew that things had just gotten a little too serio

"Drink." I looked at the veins on his throat and I could see the blood pulsing under his pale skin. I could smell the luscious life-giving blood underneath, calling to me I didn't pause to wonder what was happening to me or what I was doing. Instead, I bared my teeth and sank them into the milky-white flesh of his neck.

And when he ran it slowly around my nipple, I felt something that made me arch my back and grab his hair. Bumps. Small ones, along the entire length of his tongue. Like ridges. Like beads. Each one scraped against my skin in a different way, creating layers of sensation that my brain couldn’t process. “Mortyss…” I moaned, looking down. “Your tongue…” He raised his eyes to me without taking his mouth off my breast. His violet eyes were brighter than ever. And then, deliberately, he showed me his tongue. It was purple. Forked at the tip, like a snake’s. And along its entire length, rows of small bumps pulsed, each one the size of a tiny pea, glistening with a moisture that wasn’t human saliva.

Why…just why…did I forget that I am not supposed to forget anything? It was my fault. The tips of my fingers tingle. The surge of strange energy pulses under my skin. As I look down at my arms, I find my veins glowing blue. Instead of getting surprised, I find myself staring at them until the color becomes brighter.

I placed one hand on the mid column of my neck trying to stop the uncomfortable feeling. I looked at my reflection on the mirror of the dresser opposite to my bed. My skin turned paler than a white paper. Blue veins were prominent . My irises were deep crimson red. My canines extended not in wolf teeth but vampire's. It had been a long time since I had blood.

So why am I feeling so drained, and why does my arm throb? I pull up the soaked sleeve to inspect the area that is giving me issues and gasp out loud when I see not just a mass of dark bruising, but my veins are a deep hue of purple and angry looking. My throat goes dry when I see a small hole, no bigger than a needle, but bright red, sitting in the center of the bruising and discolored veins. What did they do to me? It’s the logical question, the only one that comes to mind. They, whoever it was that attacked me, must have caused this.

The blood vessels in the skin expanded, and the light blue veins became more visible in the warm light. His tongue traced a circle around her nipple. The touch was very gentle—the tip of his tongue merely brushed against the skin of her nipple, like a feather drawing a line on a surface. Her nipple trembled slightly as his tongue passed over it. That tremor spread from the nipple to the skin around it, causing tiny goosebumps to appear across her chest.

There's one protruding vein that starts on the under side and runs around the top, and it calls to me like a siren. Without thinking, I drop to my knees, coming eye level with his package, a gift to me, right there ready for consuming. I don't wait for an invitation or even permission. I seize the base in my hand and the head with my mouth, swirling my tongue around the tip before consuming all of him in one slow motion until my lips meet my fingers.
