The whispers grow louder until I can catch snippets of words. “...don’t…at me.” Huh? “I can’t hear you.” I say. “Cou—” He raises his head. And my tongue turns into a five-ton rock inside of my mouth as my eyes meet his. His eyes, which had been completely dark brown earlier, are tinged with a sickly hue of blue. His cheeks are the color of dead ash. I see the veins underneath, paths of thick blue twisting across his skin. Holy shit. “Don’t look at me like that.”

The symptoms were exactly as Hazel had described them. All seven of them were unconsciousness, sweating and had black veins under their skin. What confused her though, was the location and spreading of the veins. Six people only had few black veins in the abdominal area, while the seventh… it was hard to find places were he hadn't any. Not that she'd seen their whole bodies herself, but the doctor, an old man with glasses, had described it to her and he had taken off the seventh man shirt to let her see.

I explained. While I spoke, his face changed from blank to surprised, followed by a portion of relief and then to anger. He made me take a step back in surprise when he stood and loomed over me. I tilted my head to look at him. His black hair hung away from his dark blue eyes. I gasped and blinked repeatedly at the black veins that seemed to move slowly under his eyes. They were pulsing black underneath his skin. It was frightening and then of course, he had to open his mouth and show me those sharp long pearly whites.

The only person allowed to be more upset than me is her and the kids at this very moment. Nodding at my father's awfully angry face, especially given the circumstances, I look back down at my sleeping beauty. Now, as what usually happens minutes after giving a human venom of a vampire- hybrid in this case which only makes it that much better- I can see the once lightly coloured blue veins running down her neck now rotting black, indicating that it's working.

What had once been a faint discoloration had deepened into something unmistakable. A crescent curved along the side of my neck just below my jaw, its edges soft and blurred like a bruise blooming beneath the skin. The color settled into shades of deep indigo and muted violet, darker toward the outer arc, where the shape sharpened into faint, clawed ridges. The curve looked almost like a storm-wind sweeping across my throat. At the center of the crescent, a narrow lightning vein cut downward. It was thin, jagged, pale silver against the darker tones surrounding it. Not bright enough to glow, but bright enough that the shape stood out sharply if someone looked closely.

A surreal glow from below grabbed her attention and upon glancing down, the fascinating scenery put her in awe. Blue veins stretched from her toes and into the floor, branching out into other veins that spread out across the whole floor and walls, going beyond the still curtains. The same situation occurred with Bjorn’s feet and as the snaky blue veins dotted the ceiling like the branches of a tree, the small platform in front of Mel glowed a soft ashen colour, shifting the shimmering blue to a light grey.

Any thermometer would have failed to measure what I could see what I could feel. There were black veins. Thin, unnatural lines moving beneath his skin, like living ink made of shadow itself. They pulsed, spreading with each heartbeat. I had seen similar cases, but nothing like this. They’d started at his ankles, creeping upward, pulsing with an intensity that made my chest tighten. Now they had reached his waist. If they crossed any further, spread past that point, he’d be gone. Not in the usual medical sense. Gone entirely. I pressed my fingers against his wrist again, feeling the pulse. Weak, but it was there. Just barely.

I groaned flopping onto my side, my tongue hanging as I painted. “Vampire blood is poisonous to you, it causes blisters and swelling, nausea, vomiting, even in large amounts.” She said as she turned the pages. “Figured that one out on my own thanks, didn’t even need a fancy PH.D.” I rolled and stretched, desperate to find some relief from the endless churning of my gut.

He groans. Holding my gaze, he continues. “He has this very high fever, and his face and areas around his eyes are all covered with webs of dark veins that are unstable in appearance. They show up and the next second they disappear, only to appear again." He swallows hard and shakes his head. “I don’t understand it, but oh my fucking gods, I almost lost you, Bethany. Fucking Deskar, I almost-" "Don't blaspheme, please," Gebrit chides quietly, straightening and turning to the dragon shifter.
