But my reverie gets broken when he asks “Thirsty?” Not getting what he’s talking about, I stare at him in confusion until he points the long finger towards the water bottle in my hand.

“You have blood on your shoulder.” Benito looked down. “Huh.” Then he shrugged. “Not mine.” That somehow made it worse. The whistle blew. Coach pointed at us. “You are up.” Benito jumped to his feet immediately. I followed. The second my skates hit the ice again, everything else disappeared. The crowd. The pressure. The noise. All of it. There was only the game.
