His knuckles brushed mine; accident or not, I didn’t care. The contact steadied me. “Then pretend,” he said. “Just for a little longer.” I nodded, and he gave one short nod back like warriors give before battle. Looking down at the book, the title read ‘Goderick’s Guide to Vanishing Politely’.

Her cathedral. She slouched into her best corner chair—stuffed, tufted velvet in tired blue—pullding out a book from her tote. She was reading in her mind, then the windows started rattling as the lurking figure tried to push the window open. "Pay it no attention, disregard it completely, make it irrelevant. Your distraction would only thrive on your attention." She obeyed, strengthening her focus on the book she was reading, and the comments that had been left behind in the book in a beautiful handwriting she knew very well. Wait... this belonged to Eli. Wasn't this a distraction too? But it kept her focus from everything else, so maybe this was a good thing. Belladonna felt Alaris' hands trail the base of her neck and her attention wavered.
