Kennedy POV. The weather was bad, but I needed to get that new book, it's Robert birthday gift, who'd knew a grown up man would kill for the newest werewolf love book. I got into my car, drove carefully toward the local book store, they had the new book reserved for me. It was supposed to one quick drive, until I walked into the library. A girl was sitting on a bean bag, her blond hair was covering her eyes with overgrown bangs, she tried to huff them away from her face but to no use. She looked young, maybe she's just here with her parents, looking down at the book she had in her hands it was a kids story. Does she read for the local kids? Or is it just for her?

Books are oxygen for the literate. For me, there's no other way to breathe. Breathing comes naturally to living organisms. For a nerd with a perfect attendance record and zero friends, air fills my lungs, and words fill my head. I like filling my head with facts, opinions, and fanfiction. There's nothing better than reading Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings fanfics on a Friday night.

The ladies all giggle and Julie stands, handing a new bookmark to each of us. "Yes. We figured we'd get you ones that suited you a little better." she says. The new one is dark blue with gold lettering that says 'Real men read dirty books'. I smile and look over at Ev who's showing Harper his excitedly. "These are great. Thank you." I say just as Bri nudges me. "Oh! Tell them your joke, love!" Harper says excitedly. Ev rolls his eyes before addressing the group.

He looked relaxed, laid-back in a way I hadn’t seen him before now. “Okay, what about books?” he asked. “My turn again.” “Oh, that’s a tough one.” I furrowed my brow. As a librarian, it was difficult to come close to narrowing it down to one or even ten. “I don’t know. But I’ll always love Stephen King.” “Right.” He nodded.

Her breath, even and unhurried. She passed a bookstore. The same one she’d power-walked past every morning for a year, late to a standup, coffee sloshing, brain already compiling the day’s failure modes. Today she stopped. She went inside. The air smelled like paper and dust and time. She bought a novel she’d seen months ago and never had time for. Six hundred and twelve pages. No table of contents. No appendix on scaling Kubernetes. The cover was a deep, useless blue. The synopsis mentioned a lighthouse. She didn’t even read the whole thing.

That counts for something, right? My name is Annalise McDermott. And for the record, I am a nerd. A hopeless romantic. A person who believes in love even when it clearly hates me back. This is my playbook, a chronicle of terrible timing, questionable decisions, and the kind of love that shows up when you least expect it, usually right after you've sworn you’re never falling in love again. So here is a little friendly advice: do not follow my advice. At least not until the very end.

"I'm majoring in English." He smirks, "You're a book nerd?" "I'm a bibliophile. There's a difference." He leans in, his lips inches from mine. "Oh yeah, so enlighten me. What is the difference?" "A bibliophile is a lover of books, who also collects them." I feel my cheeks heating. I feel like a geek. "Whereas a book nerd is someone who always has their head stuck in a book, technically learning." He stares at me in disbelief. "Princess." He murmurs and shakes his head.

“I know what you mean. I had one too—it was a family outing for us, going to the library. My mom insisted my brother and I read books if we wanted to play video games. I was that nerdy kid who actually preferred reading to gaming. I guess it carried over into adulthood.” Fiona’s gaze focused on his face, and one side of her mouth smirked. “Nothing wrong with that.” Handing the book back to him, she continued to investigate the books lining the shelves. “Do you have a favorite in here or in one of the boxes?” Chris chuckled. “Well, having a degree in English Literature, you’d think so. But I love so many of them. I’m partial to the classics—Keats and Shelley, Lord Byron, Shakespeare…”
