I stood outside the Elder's housing estate, staring up at the large black iron gates in front of me. They were intricate yet terrifying at the same time, but I knew what laid behind them would be even more nerve-wracking. The doorman saw me and recognised who I was immediately, opening the gates without needing to identify myself or even speak. I entered quietly, heading towards the fate I knew would be waiting for me just inside the lavishly large building.

The words seemed to leap off the page, filling the room with an eerie sense of foreboding. Everything written in the book didn't make any sense to either Stella or Morgan. They found everything in the book quite absurd. The book spoke of witches, dragons, angels, vampires, and the devil. They didn't believe in such a thing at all, weren't they just fantasy? If they were to interpret it, it only meant that Grandma Elizabeth was a witch while the stranger guy whom Stella had picked from the streets the previous night was the devil.

It stood between us and the chaos of the world outside, keeping out the rogues and anyone else who sought to harm us. It had four gates on each side. The typical, west, east, north, and south gates. Four entrances, heavily guarded. Perhaps I should have made only two gates but when I thought about the situation where panic has risen.... people would need more than one way to escape. I wasn’t about to doom everyone due to my paranoia. Although my people only used two gates I’ve been seen only mentioning two gates.

A word of fear. “The book.” Mara looked at him. “What book?” The boy did not answer immediately. His eyes were on the gate. Then he said quietly: “The book where your history ends.” And the gate started to open slowly.

The entrance was a towering archway of black stone etched with golden runes, half-buried beneath tangled vines and glowing moss. And at its center, a door. It wasn’t made of stone or wood, but of pure energy—shifting between light and shadow, bleeding into the air like liquid fire. The Gate. My marks pulsed violently, a heartbeat syncing with the energy ahead. The servants halted at the clearing’s edge, bowing low, as if in reverence. Aaron stopped beside me, chest heaving. “It’s awake.” Edward’s grip tightened on his sword. “Then we shut it down before it opens any further.”

Symbols similar to those in Anna’s book glowed faintly on its surface. “This must be it,” Anna said, her voice filled with a mix of relief and apprehension. Ryan approached the gate, running his fingers over the symbols. “So… how do we open it?” Anna stepped forward, holding the book up to the gate. The symbols on the gate began to glow brighter, matching the book’s light. With a deep rumble, the gate slowly opened, revealing a chamber bathed in ethereal light. Inside stood the guides—three ghostly figures cloaked in shimmering robes. Their faces were obscured, but their presence exuded a sense of ancient wisdom.

I tell him as we enter the last door, which opens up to the gates. The gates of purgatory. They are more like doors. Same as the pearly gates. They aren’t pearly or gates; they are actually solid gold doors. Whoever called them gates clearly hasn’t seen them. However, they do the job and if people want to see them as gates, then who am I to argue? They are huge; the gates are grey. You can see the trapped souls moving on them, reaching their stretched white arms forward begging to be released, their jaws slack and eyes black. They are truly damned. It’s an eerie scene. One that I always find fascinating.

Any non-mermaid that touches the gate of Seareign will be stroked with a bolt of non-escapable eel thunder which will lead to the death of the non-mermaid. The gate is unguarded as it is a guard itself. It allows no one in and no one out. There is no way to breach the gate of Seareign. Those who tried, died.> “That means the gate cannot be breached?” Elliot closed the tome of mermaids and opened the book of answers. The book of answers had no words written in its pages. The pages were blank. “The pages are blank.”

Chapter 10: Echoes of Destruction The rusted iron gates of the obsidian citadel loomed before them, a gaping maw in the desolate crimson landscape. Behind them, the monstrous creatures howled in frustration, their metallic claws scraping against the barren rock. Evie and Liam, hearts pounding in their chests, sprinted towards the gate, desperate for any semblance of refuge. With a resounding clang, the gate swung open, revealing a dark, cavernous entrance. Without hesitation, they plunged into the cool, stale air that emanated from within. The heavy gate slammed shut behind them, momentarily cutting off the sounds of the pursuing horde.

“I see. You don’t even have a phone so I guess I can expect that much.” ‘A phone?’ Before she could ask Jina what is a phone Jina already started with her explanation. “You see, three months ago those gates started appearing they are like portals of some sort. There are two types of ‘gates’. The first one is a ‘blue gate’. In a blue gate people fight monsters inside. The other one is a ‘red gate’, if people is the one entering a blue gate in the case of a red gate, the monsters are the ones coming out or maybe in their perspective, going in. There are some cases when blue gates turn into red gates. Monsters coming out in a red gate only stop after a whole day or should I say it closes?”
