4 ~ My Priest, My Damnation. JOSEPH’s POV The vespers service ended with the choir's voices fading into solemn chants, the last notes hanging like smoke in the dimming light. I sat in the front pew, my hands clasped too tightly in prayer, but my mind was a whirlwind of anticipation and guilt. Father Matteo stood at the altar, his silhouette framed by flickering candles and the massive crucifix looming overhead. His homily had been on temptation and the flesh's weakness, words that felt aimed straight at me, each syllable stoking the fire low in my belly.

Bianca pressed the note to her chest. The fire inside her flared brighter. If Matteo thought he was the only one playing this game he was wrong. And in the silence of the chapel, Matteo knelt again, whispering words only the walls could hear. “God forgive me… for keeping her alive.”

Chapter 48 MATTHEW I woke for the third time that night with Bianca's name dying on my lips, my heart was pounding hard against my ribs like it was trying to escape my chest. I placed a hand to it, taking deep breaths to regulate myself, my eyes searching for nothing particular in the dark room, faintly lit up by the moon light from the sky.

Memories crashed over me like a tidal wave—flames, screaming, smoke, my mother’s voice, promising vengeance. I dropped to my knees. My vision spun. My lungs forgot how to breathe. “She’s here,” I gasped. “I feel her.” Matthew knelt beside me, his hand on my back. “Look at me. Eztli. Breathe.” “I can’t.” I dug my nails into the dirt. “She’s everywhere. She’s in the air.” “Then let her come,” he said. “We’re not running this time.” His voice steadied me—like an anchor pulling me out of the storm.

“I agree wholeheartedly, Your Grace.” * * * * Lindsay stood next to Barry in front of a clergyman as he read out of the Book of Common Prayer. Her grandmother had told her she’d be nervous today, but Lindsay wasn’t. Excitement ran through her veins, and she couldn’t stop smiling. Love blossomed inside of her, and each new day with Barry would only be an adventure, she was certain.

The four of them will run off to their hangout room slash office and discuss whatever they perceive to be going on with me anyway, so why bother. "Well?"

Another tentacle came for him and he managed to dodge it.
