Maya’s fingers scraped against the cold, rough edge of the roof. The black book—their only proof Julian was a good man—started sliding away. It hit a patch of ice and teetered, right at the edge of a five-story drop. One more slip, and the wind would tear those pages apart. All their hope, scattered. “No!” Maya gasped.

Beside her, Lucian stood rigid as a statue, his silver eyes tracking the parchment. A drop of pristine water from the glen, placed at the center of the map, suddenly began to ripple outward against gravity. The ancient, shimmering ink beneath the water began to bleed, shifting and re-shaping into vivid, moving shadows. The vellum ceased to be a flat piece of skin; it became a window.

KNOX’S POV I turn the next page. Nothing. I turn the next. Nothing. It is page after page of completely blank, yellowing paper. I go faster, thumbing frantically through the rest of the book with my heart hammering against my ribs. Empty. The entire thing is fucking empty. I drop it and snatch up the next one from the pile. I rip it open. This one has writing in it. For one split second, everything inside me lifts.

Guards on the first floor landing were positioned with their weapons facing the mass of dead that were slowly pushing their way into the housing block. “Here we go.” Two of the soldiers fell back, running full pelt towards the stairs as the rest of us fanned out a little to even the load. Just a few more minutes, we just had to hold them back for a few more minutes. A scream from the top floor had the dead before me distracted for a second and I sank my knife into his neck before quickly yanking it back out. One more down. I just had to keep telling myself that, focus on one at a time rather than the hundreds that had massed.

I placed the book back on the shelf and continued to scan the titles. ‘Understanding the Order and Hierarchy of Vampires.’ The book wasn't what I was looking for, but it did pique my interest. I stepped down from the stool and blew the dust off the front cover. Oh, shit! I screamed and dropped the book as a spider crawled over the opening page. I watched the spider stroll down the red carpet until it was out of sight and then picked up the book, looking around, half expecting someone to come due to the noise I was making. But when no one did, I continued.

Harold stammered, trying to sound like a student found smoking in the school environment was something that happened everyday. “You're cool,” the student said with eyes of administration as he walked to Harold.
