"‘Little Women.’ Found it in one of the boxes at the cabin.” He nodded, “That might have been one of Aunt Beth’s favorite books.” “Wait, the cabin was owned by your Aunt?” “Yeah, it was one of her places. She left it to me before she moved to Canada and passed away.” “Oh, I'm sorry.” “It's okay. It's been a while. She was a bookworm and had a hobby to left a box of her favorite books in every place she left”

he said, extending the book towards me. I took the book, my fingers brushing against the cover as I examined the title. "Little Women," I read aloud, a sense of familiarity washing over me. "Yes, it was Jacob's favorite book, and I think you will find it captivating too," he explained, his voice filled with warmth and nostalgia. "I'm sure I will," I replied, a soft smile playing on my lips, feeling a connection to Jacob through this shared love for literature. I ran my fingers along the cover, appreciating the weight of the book and the memories it held.

The city turned on its fairy lights. I cleaned up, because order gave me back my spine. I wrote the red sticky note because words make everything feel less like a cliff. I left the box on his desk like a confession and tidied my corner to erase the place where I’d been. Then I locked up. On the subway, I watched my reflection wonder if I’d done anything right at all. At home, I put on Little Women. I have a soft spot for women who insist on their own minds. My phone buzzed. Where?

I always wanted to have one. The books reached the top of the ceiling and there were ladders everywhere. I walked around the library, scanning the books. Some of them were old and some of them were new. There was also a desk in the corner of the room, stacked with books and book markers. I walked over to the desk and picked up the first book. A thousand Splendid Suns. I remembered when I was younger how I cried my heart out while reading this book. It's so well written and I couldn't get enough of it.

I threw myself back in the teal armchair, annoyed that I didn't discover anything. Then I see it. An old copy of Pride and Prejudice. But what strikes me is that this is not the only copy of this book I've spotted on her shelves. In the 11th grade, we were assigned the book for our English literature class. While I love to read, I do not like being told what I should or shouldn't read. I complained to my mother that there was no sense in reading 18th-century chick lit that has no place in today's world. The reviews began arriving on Thursday. Patricia Osei had told me to read them but not to organize my understanding of the book around them because the book had been written for the women in the long middle and the women in the long middle were not the reviewers. The reviewers were the first room the book passed through on its way to the people it was for. The first review I read was from a literary publication that described the book as unflinching and specific and written with the particular authority of someone who had lived inside the thing she was describing rather than observing it from outside.
