"Your book," she said, her voice low and sincere. "It's beautiful. But it's also... I don't know if you meant it this way, but it's about healing. About finding safety after the storm. Our organization works with families who have survived domestic violence and coercive control. We have a reading program for the children. I'd love to use your book. If you'd allow it."

I pulled it out carefully and set it on my lap. The leather cover was cool under my fingers. Old. Well worn. I opened to the first page. Cornelius had been right. The book was a record of great families. Their histories, their achievements, their bloodlines traced back through generations. I flipped past the introduction, past the table of contents. The pages were thick, slightly yellowed with age. Someone had written in the margins in places. Notes in different hands, different inks. I found the section on witches and warlocks.

"Grandma Martha..." "Yes?" "I love you." She laughed. "I love you too." Lucas smiled as he watched them. He realized something. Family was not only about blood. It was about love. About the people who stayed. About the people who chose each other every day. He silently thanked Martha for taking care of Naomi and Leo when he could not. --- While they ate the cake, Leo suddenly remembered something. "Lucas!" "Yes?" "You promised to tell me about your favorite book." Lucas smiled.

“That’s exactly what your grandmother used to say at your age.” I wandered farther between the narrow shelves mostly to escape the public humiliation, while Harmony disappeared toward the romance section making loud, dramatic noises about enemies-to-lovers tropes. The bookstore glowed softly beneath the low hanging lights while the snow drifted in thick waves outside the front windows facing Main Street. I paused near the folklore section automatically, my fingers tracing the bindings. Appalachian legends, mountain myths, and local history books lined the dark wood. One specific title caught my eye immediately: The Founding Families of Black Hollow.

"A baby brother?" "Yes, sweetie," I whispered as I leaned closer. "You, me, your daddy, and your new little brother are going to be a perfect family. You won't ever need to think about her again." Kenny looked down at his book. Only then did I notice that he was reading a book about families. The page he was on read: "A family comprises a father, a mother, and their children." I patted his cheek. “If you miss your mum so much, you can call me mummy.”

“We were Family. Do you know what that means in the Bratva?” I shake my head. “I barely know what family is anymore.” “Well, in the Bratva, Family is the unseen force that holds everything together. In the blood, there are cells, and these cells are a collection of molecules, and these are a collection of atoms. These atoms, they are held together by an invisible force, the willpower of the universe, and I believe this extends back up to the animal kingdom, and to Family in particular.” I wasn’t expecting such a deep explanation from him, and I’m already captivated. I lean forward, clasping my hands together as I soak up every word he utters.
