"Most of them involve keeping the people I love safe. That's not exactly complicated math."
She laughed softly, leaning her head against my shoulder, and for a little while we just sat there, listening to the wind move through the trees, letting ourselves believe, at least for one night, that we'd bought something real.
"I keep waiting for the part where this is actually over," she said after a while. "Every time we win something, it just turns into the next thing waiting behind it."
"Maybe it doesn't end all at once," I said. "Maybe it just gets smaller, piece by piece, until one day you look up and realize most of the fight is behind you instead of in front of you."
