Chapter Four: Echo Protocol The vault burned behind them. Roman’s fingers gripped the detonator as they stood at a safe distance, the explosive charges having been carefully placed on every terminal, server, and failsafe hatch. When the shockwave rippled through the forest, birds scattered from the trees like shattered glass, and the earth rumbled with the sound of severed history. Ash and memory turned to smoke. Eden didn’t flinch as the flames reached the sky. She only turned away once the fire no longer burned in her periphery. Roman watched her for a moment, something unreadable in his eyes.

She smiled. The heat here reminded her of her summer in Johannesburg, she thought of the cool water at the beaches she had visited and suddenly became thirsty. She ran her wet tongue over her parched lips and wished it would suddenly rain but then she groaned at the thought, it never rained in the desert. She rolled her head and jumped in frustration, upsetting the sand beneath her feet, sending dust particles up in the air.

A massive meteorite had fallen on Earth and was now sitting on the peak of a mountain, transmitting its destructive radiation down through the roots of the trees and contaminating all nearby water sources on Earth. The apocalypse had happened because of this meteorite. Octoria, one of the major countries, had launched missiles at it, intending to shatter the meteorite before it entered the Earth's stratosphere. However, they hadn't known then that the meteorite would turn out to be so hard and dense.

POV: Scarlett Smoke still curled lazily into the morning sky, carrying the acrid scent of scorched metal and melted circuitry. Behind them, the Genesis facility lay in ruins, broken walls folding inward like dying embers, twisted steel and ash settling into an uneasy silence. Scarlett stood frozen amid the debris, dust clinging to her clothes and skin. Her lungs still burned from the desperate sprint. Her hands trembled at her sides. But none of it mattered next to Victor’s words, which echoed louder than the explosion itself.

The paper curled the moment it kissed the flame. Scarlet didn’t hesitate. She pressed the notebook harder into the candlelight, watching as the edges blackened, the ink blistering and fading into nothing. Her skin glowed faintly, as if some otherworldly energy had just released her, and after a few heartbeats, she began to stir, slowly coming back to herself.
