They were from readers who had been touched by my story, who had found comfort and solace in my words. One comment in particular caught my eye. It was from a woman who said that my book had helped her to heal from her own experiences of trauma and abuse. She said that my story had given her the courage to speak out and to seek help, and that she would be forever grateful to me for that.

Apparently, she was one of the best psychologists in the world for women dealing with abuse. Ellie wasn’t sure if what she’d gone through counted as “domestic,” but it had definitely been violent and traumatic. She could still see James’s cruel face, still hear his harsh voice echoing in her head, still feel his blows. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw him again. The memories were returning piece by piece and they were too vivid, and sometimes so real she had to remind herself she was safe.
