She sat in the corner of her cell all day without sleep, murmuring to herself over and over that it was all her fault. "Zachary, I'm sorry… If there's a next life, I promise I'll make it up to you." Without thinking, I immediately responded, "That won't be necessary, Mom. I don't want to be your son in the next life." As if she could suddenly see me, Mom turned toward me and exclaimed, "Zachary, you came to visit me! I knew you couldn't bear to leave me." I was startled, but I tried speaking to her again.

"Miss, hold on. We will save you." I fought to keep my eyes open, refusing to let myself slip into unconsciousness. However, my awareness began to fade, and I could feel the warmth of my blood draining away. A tear slipped from the corner of my eye, and in that final, fleeting moment before darkness took me, I wondered why it hurt so much. Despite spending seven years as his wife, when it came down to life and death, he chose someone else without a second thought. In the haze, I heard someone calling my name.

We were both exhausted. I turned and walked into the airport. Traveling without him would be more enjoyable. I got to see the sunrise over the mountains as I wished, in a small town at the foot of the snowy mountains. I turned off my phone and isolated myself from the world for a week. During that week, I learned a valuable lesson. The most important person to love in life is yourself.

Whatever they were doing in there—whether it was work or something else—I couldn't care less anymore. I went into the spare bedroom, grabbed the old hiking backpack I used to use, and packed a few things inside. They still hadn't come out by the time I was ready to leave. Only some faint noise could be heard through the crack in the study door.

She looked stunned when they brought her into the room, something we're all used to when someone outside the family sees Pop's largess for the first time up-close and personal. "Wow, what is this?" She gravitated to the books that lined one wall, all classics, most of which were collector's editions. "Is this an original Herodotus?" She pulled her hand back from the volume making the twins laugh, and me smile. She acts like Pop and Uncle Garrett with books. They swear the rest of us are heathens because we don't all genuflect before the greats like they do.

The book on my lap fell to the ground. Alex picked it up and scanned the cover. "Human Biology." He arched a brow in my direction. "You can read?" The edges of my lips tilted at his question. "Yes, my mother taught me. She used to draw words and letters in the sand when I was younger. I had not seen a book until now, though. Mother often said the leaves were delicate and would tear apart in water. There were times when she said books were like life. Sometimes it took on a drop of disaster to tear our lives apart."

“I–” “Oh, or am I even qualified to talk about forgiveness?” I cut in. “After you came back from studying abroad, you were never short on women. Compared to them, an ex like me isn’t worth mentioning. In your eyes, I probably don’t even count as a person; I’m just a backup you can keep around for life.” Finn denied it over and over again. “No. That’s not what I think. I just didn’t realize… that I still love you.”

Harrington backing me, I'd have to prove I still had it. Good thing my foundation was solid. I'd catch up fast. "You're reading research journals?" I hadn't even heard him come back in. He picked one up, flipped through it, then tossed it back with a smirk. "Why are you reading this stuff? Do you even get it?" I stacked the papers. "Just browsing."

I need to take time. I remember the small room I entered last time. I slowly opened the door and turned on the lampshade. The books on the table were still scattered. I tried to look and read each one of them. These are all interesting books. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and a lot more. I tried to find something that might help me, but I found nothing.
