Books For Her Novels & Stories

If she could be surrounded by books all day every day, she would. June spent so much time around the books that she was one of the smartest people Emily had ever met. Over the years she had probably read every single book in that place. And it was a huge building with thousands of books. She had read all the medical and scientific books, every nonfiction book they had, and encyclopedias. She also read all the history books. Not just the human history, but the werewolf history too. But even June would say the smutty books were still her favorite.

I felt heat start to pool low and a blush start to crawl up my neck. "About his ability to make himself everyone's problem." "Well, that tracks. At least from the little bit I've known him." She leaned closer to Rowan's section and started reading the titles off like she was browsing a bookstore. The books were a chaotic mix, some genuinely useful, others questionably so, but all jammed together in no particular order. Dust drifted lazily through the air, untouched by the silence that surrounded the room. She wandered slowly between the shelves, unable to hide the excitement in her eyes. "I could spend an entire lifetime in here," she murmured. Mia chuckled. I'm beginning to think you'd choose books over food. Adriana smiled. "I might." Her fingers trailed lightly across the worn spines of countless books. Some were bound in rich leather, others in faded cloth that had nearly fallen apart with age. She passed sections on herbal medicine, the history of forgotten kingdoms, dragon lore, ancient wolves, and magical creatures she had never heard of.

I wasn't sure whose I wanted more. "Excellent choice. Those guys are legendary." She was trying to make small talk but talking wasn't my thing. Sorry. "Here, one of Walt's best art work." She handed me a book. "Song of myself." I read the title out loud while checking out the book. "Or do you prefer Leaves of grass? That one is quite nice but I prefer this one." She said. The lady was a strawberry blonde with brown eyes. She had a round baby like face and slim lips. She was pretty and looked within her early twenties.

As she checked the middle of the shelf, a certain book struck her observation. It had the title The Kingdom Itself: Snails on it. "That's a strange name for a kids' story," she whispered but bypassed it and continued the search.

Why does she always look so at peace around sad stories? “Oh—right,” I stammered when I realized she was waiting for an answer. “It’s, uh, The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.” She nodded thoughtfully. “Do you want us to find it first?” I shook my head. “Why?” she pressed, but I only shrugged. Rolling her eyes, she placed another hardcover on my growing pile. “Let’s go check if they have a cart.” My eyes widened. “How many are you planning to buy?”

She could now identify seven types of military aircraft just by their silhouettes. She considered it a useful everyday skill. I discovered her three favorite books by asking her teacher. Not by asking Lucy directly, because that would have given me a list of her current favorites rather than the books she'd loved forever, the ones she'd read so many times that their bindings were worn. I read all three. One was about a girl who could talk to animals. Another was about a lighthouse keeper's daughter who solved a mystery. The last was about a small creature crossing a vast landscape in search of a lost object.

We walk past her walking towards the books that were in the back of the store. I turn back to look at her, I get scared as her face looked burned and her face was melting off her skull. I look away and shake my head trying to clear my head. "Hey look, there's a book about astral projection with tips on how to do it." She grabs the book off the shelf and walks over to the crystals and starts to look at various ones. She grabs the ones that look nicest to her, not reading any description on them. I tried to help but she shrugged me off and said "I like these instead."

I feel my whole body relax like it only does when she's close. "You don't need to be embarrassed about reading dirty books. I've been doing it for years." she says and my head pops up and I stare at her to determine how serious she is. But I don't sense even hint of joking. How interesting. "Really? What kind of books do you like?" I ask and watch with fascination as an adorable blush creeps up her face. "Um... mostly small town romance. Single dad, friends to lovers, next door neighbors, things like that." she says a little shyly making me chuckle.
