"I agree that it helped me to curtail the bullying, but I think I eventually fell in love with this place." She got up, walked towards a shelf, and brought out a book at random. "I've been learning about a lot of things - my family, ancient history, you name it." She pulled multiple other books from the shelf and placed them on the table. "These books were literally my companions the past three years." I looked through the books she selected, most of them old, dusty, and gritty. "You've read all these?" I asked, looking through the books she selected.

Kael's POV But then I remember something: the bookstore she wandered into while I was buying her clothes. The way her entire body changed when she picked up that gardening book. The pure contentment I felt through our bond—the first real happiness I’d ever sensed from her. She likes books about herbs. About plants and their medicinal properties. Of course! She’s an herbalist, but most of the equipment she carries is broken. I’ve seen the cracked mortar, the rusted tools, the makeshift containers she uses to store what little she can gather.

I needed to cut her off. "Look, they're doing the walking around the fire thing." She said. I hummed non committal. "I read about it in this book by Drethi Anis. Five thousand nights of obsession. The book was so good." "You read?" I asked. I had never seen any book in her apartment or caught her with a book. "Yes." She blushed, then quietly. "Romance books." "You don't strike me as the romance type." I looked at her intently. "Is it one of those raunchy books with shirtless men carrying scabbards on the cover."

But instead, there she was. A girl with violet-tipped hair, dark eyeliner, and a leather satchel full of books. She smiled nervously. "Hi. You must be Rhea Cross?” I nodded, still recovering from the fact that she looked like she’d stepped out of a tarot card deck.

Her mouth parted without permission. “I noticed you have plenty of other books and sketch magazines like this. So I decided to get these” he said calmly, like he hadn’t just dropped a bomb on her fragile emotions. She lifted one of the books carefully, almost like it might disappear if she wasn’t gentle enough. “These novels haven’t been released in the market yet” she said softly. “And these are my favorite magazines” she said, referring to the long magazines. She loved reading when she wasn’t sketching. She loved getting lost in stories. She had been counting down the months for these exact books to be available. She had talked about them without even realizing how often.

Damon had actually created a separate shelf for my medical books so I never actually checked the entire book collection. I was awestruck when I saw great love stories in the shelf. It was a combination of great poems and some heavenly love stories. This was unbelievable. Things were really unbeleivable about Damon. Finding a book in his drawer having contents of all the people he had saved from dying and then finding that he is actually a romance loving person made me believe that I have actually never known him.

She picked up many books individually and made a pile of them. "When will you read so many books?" Nina asked surprisingly. "When your boss is not around," Elaina winked and started looking for books again. She picked up books from famous authors like Jane Austin, Sarah, Colleen Hoover, and Anna Huang. Nina shook her head and made her way toward the exit.

I tried to control myself from rolling my eyes. "Don't worry about him, she's our family friend. I can tell Ares likes you a lot." She gravitated to the books that lined one wall, all classics, most of which were collector's editions. "Is this an original Herodotus?" She pulled her hand back from the volume making the twins laugh, and me smile. She acts like Pop and Uncle Garrett with books. They swear the rest of us are heathens because we don't all genuflect before the greats like they do.

I put it down on the coffee table. “How about Biographies of the government officials? And World Famous Personality, if you have the latest edition.” “Sure.” I couldn’t take it anymore. I smiled. “You’re studying, Kennedy?” “Curiosity kills the cat.” Her answer was always concise. It hurt, but at least she was talking to me. The book she was looking for was just on top of the table. “It’s right there.” “Thanks for the help.” She carried three books into her arms.
