I tried to dismiss the thought, but it persisted, twisting around my heart like a frigid knot.
Ava turned the first page of her book and pointed at a sketched figure. "This is me!" she proudly exclaimed, tapping her sketch of a circular creature with a large head. "See? "I'm wearing a red dress and my hair is blue!"
Alex leaned closer, his gaze filled with awe. "Wow, that is wonderful! I like the red outfit, and the blue hair is good for a celebrity like you!"
Ava giggled, delighted by the compliment. I could tell how much it meant to her, as her eyes shone like small stars. It made me question if I'd ever be able to give her that type of compliment—or make her grin like that again.
