It's kind of wild how the fantasy scene on BookTok feels like it's pivoting this year. For a while, it was all romantasy with fae courts and mates, but 2025 seems to be trending back toward denser, almost old-school epic fantasy with fresh twists. The big one everyone's losing it over is 'The Trials of the Crimson Scribe' by an author who got their start in web serials. It's got this insane magic system based on contractual agreements and the power of written words, which, yeah, feels meta for the platform. The political intrigue is thick, but the character work is what gets you—it's a slow burn found family between a jaded scribe, a deposed prince, and a demon bound in ink.
Another that's constantly on my FYP is 'Gilded Ashes of the Sunless City'. That title alone sells it. It's secondary world but with this decaying, art deco-inspired city where light is currency. Less about big battles, more about a heist to steal a sunrise. The aesthetic is everything—very moody, very atmospheric. I see a lot of fanart for the spires and the gilded, gas-lit streets. Honestly, it's the worldbuilding that hooked me; the plot takes a bit to get going but the vibes are immaculate.
Don't sleep on 'A Psalm for Silent Things' either. It's being pitched as 'if cosmic horror had a ballad,' which is a weird but accurate tagline. Follows a monastic order that sings to keep ancient, sleeping gods quiet. The prose is lyrical in a way that either totally works for you or feels overly ornate, but the tension is phenomenal. The whole community is divided on which side character should get a spin-off, which is always a good sign.
