When they were out of the main drinking area, where the nightclubs and bars were located, Lucas allowed himself a small, satisfied smile. Ema would be pleased. After weeks of failure, they were positive that they would receive exactly what they had been looking for. Astor followed the smell to a little, independent bookshop nestled in between a thrift store and a vegan café. Over the door was a sign that proclaimed ‘Bookmark Haven’ in finely chipped gold paint. Indeed, the bookstore was closed, and all the windows in it were blind, but Lucas was convinced the individuals were still alive in the building.

“Oh my God, stop reading that book.” He clutches it to his chest and gasps. “This is my new favorite book. It’s giving me lots of ideas.” Rhett bookmarks the page with an actual bookmark (I couldn’t be more proud) and smirks. “I didn’t know you were such a dirty girl.” “Did you read the whole thing?”

The grate in the library was secured by four heavy-duty flathead screws. Aaron’s house was a minimalist's dream, which meant there were no stray tools, no junk drawers, nothing out of place. I found my solution at 7:00 PM in the library. Elena had stepped out to take a call from the central hub in the basement, leaving me alone with the thousands of silent books. On the desk there was a silver-weighted bookmark. It was a thin blade of polished metal meant to hold the place of rare manuscripts. I picked it up. The edge was blunt but the tip was tapered and strong.

Dean replied as she and JD worked on the sandwiches. Cooper flipped open the book and looked at the thin gold bookmark with a black and gold braided cord with a tiny crown tied in the knot. “Ummm…. Gold?” “Gold?” JD asked as he tried to remember which of the princesses had the golden bookmark. “Daphne.” She explained. “That’s not her typical book.” Cooper smirked and started reading the passage that was marked by a small blue heart. He quickly regretted it as he realized that it was a scene between an Omega and her Alpha. Closing the book in mid-sentence, he sat it back where it had been.

That girl loved books with the intensity of somebody protecting national treasure. One afternoon she complained for nearly ten minutes about people folding pages inside books. “They destroy the spine,” she said with genuine heartbreak. The next visit, Dave brought bookmarks. Not random bookmarks either. Magnetic galaxy themed ones because apparently he had noticed she gravitated toward all the space books in the previous gift pile. Ava didn’t react dramatically. That was not her personality. She just quietly accepted them. But later that evening, I walked into her room and saw every single bookmark already carefully arranged inside her favorite books.
