"You talk like someone educated." My pulse spiked. "I read a lot, sir. Books are cheap." "Hmm." The single sound felt like a challenge but I held his gaze and refused to look away first. If I backed down now, he'd know something was wrong. Finally, he looked down at the binder in front of him and closed it without reading a single page. "Start with my schedule. It's on the computer. The password is on the sticky note under the keyboard." I stood up and moved to the smaller desk in the corner of his office where a second computer sat. Sure enough, there was a yellow sticky note under the keyboard with a string of numbers and letters. I logged in and pulled up his calendar.

No gaps long enough to breathe. I scrolled. Calendar entries followed. Digital recreations of what must have once been handwritten. I tried to focus on my work but got too curious about what he was doing and leaned over. He turned the phone so I could see. It looked like… a calendar. “My book release schedule,” he explained quietly. “I’m trying to figure out what to push.” I frowned. “Why do you have to push anything.” He lifted an eyebrow at me and gestured between us. “Oh. Well, I’m not dropping out of my classes,” I warned. “I know.” His lips curved upward, his expression amused. “You didn’t make me hunt long, so I might not need to change any of the dates. I’m just looking at the schedule, so I can decide,” he explained.

I could definitely get used to this. A few hours passed as I spent it rearranging my books and planning my days for the first official week as Landon’s itinerary was sent to me via Delaney. I placed every important event into my phone’s calendar before realizing there was a double appointment for him that coming Wednesday. Knowing Brooks was still awake from the light beneath his office door, I prepped my hand to knock before hearing a grunt.

“This is your bible for the next six months.” I stare at the binder. It’s got to be three inches thick. “You’re joking.” “I never joke about image management.” He opens it to the first tab. “Schedule. This is every event you’ll attend with Adrian for the next six months. Charity galas, corporate dinners, family functions, select social gatherings. Each one has a briefing document with guest lists, expected attendance, and your role.” I flip through pages of dates. Some weeks have three events. Four in December.

Celeste said, and turned the page in her notebook. She wrote out the morning’s priorities with the same careful spacing she always used. Flights. Lodging. Local transport. Weather contingencies. She did not write clocks. The second prank arrived louder. It came disguised as normalcy. As cooperation. As the keyboard beneath her fingers behaving exactly as it always had until it didn’t. She was midway through drafting a venue update when she hit save and her screen bloomed into a calendar view, bright and cheerful, like a party she hadn’t agreed to attend.
