“How do you always know?” Aaron smiled faintly. “Because you get that wrinkle between your eyebrows.” Without thinking, Claire touched her forehead. Aaron laughed softly. “There it is again.” To her surprise, Claire laughed too. And for a moment— she felt light. Not forced. Not careful. Just… light. Aaron noticed the change immediately. “You smile more now,” he said quietly. Claire’s fingers paused around her cup. Did she? Maybe she did. Or maybe she had simply forgotten what constant sadness felt like until she escaped it.

The airplane’s hum enveloped me in a soft cocoon, quieter than I had anticipated. Down below, Colorado’s breathtaking landscape melted into an expanse of thick, downy clouds and snowy-ridged peaks whose white tops reflected what was left of light. My forehead was against the cold glass on the oval window, and I watched the familiar landscape drop away, with my breath tracing ephemeral clouds on frost-nipped glass. I didn’t cry. Nor did I feel the restless urge to flee or look back. This was not an escape; it was a bold beginning.

Clarissa As the blue cloud dissipated, a sudden rush of darkness overwhelmed Clarissa’s senses. Shadows swallowed the world around. A chill ran through her soul. The bond with Stefan and Blake thrummed with concern, but she was already being pulled away. She stood alone in a broken landscape. The sky was a mass of swirling black clouds, blotting out any light. The ground cracked and crumbled, swallowing remnants of once-great cities. Rivers of molten lava snaked through the land, burning everything in their path. The smell of sulfur and ash assaulted her senses.

A low, ancient vibration thrums through the air, through my bones, through the lightning inside me like fingers dragging along my ribs. The mist thickens. The light dims. And something enormous moves in the shadows. The echo bows her head or what remains of it. “She wakes.” My throat goes dry. “No… no, she shouldn’t Aria and I we broke the barrier she wasn’t supposed to ” The echo laughs softly, flickering. “You shattered a lock, little storm. Not the prison.” The air grows colder. Heavier. The mist parts. And a silhouette forms Tall. Graceful.

Danica POV Dmitry reached for my arm once more, but I wiggled out of his grasp and burst through the door. I didn’t stop there. I kept going, making my way through the same crowd that gawked at my outburst. My feet didn’t stop there. I kept moving. A few seconds after pushing through groups of people, I heard Dmitry shouting my name and a few onlookers pronouncing their shock at his outburst. Still I didn’t turn back to look at him. I knew if I did, he would only end up embarrassed and I would end up hurt. Or should I say, more hurt.

And in the distance, thunder rolled through a sky that had no clouds. Something powerful was returning.

The Race to the Summit The sky was breaking. Literally breaking. Cracks spread across the heavens like shattered glass. Red light poured through the fractures. The gigantic hand continued pushing inward. Slowly. Relentlessly. Patiently. God. No. Fair. Absolutely not. Reasonable honestly. Then the Bastion shook again. BOOOOOOOOM! Ancient towers collapsed. Blue energy surged through every wall. The fortress was fighting back. Then the final key appeared. At the highest point of the Bastion.

Silence fell again. Then, a huge fracture tore across the sky. The glowing lattice flickered violently. The shadow behind it pushed harder now. It surged forward. And for the first time… They saw clearly as a single colossal shape began to push through the breaking barrier. Aria felt the blood drain from her face. Because she knew that whatever was coming through the sky was far larger than the world waiting beneath it.
