The choice was taken from him a second later. Jared’s other claw wrapped around his shoulder, and they stumbled into a grassy field, speckled with wilting flowers.
Overhead, the sunlight fizzled like static. It blinked out of existence, only to be replaced a second later by two suns in its place. They wavered, as unreal as a mirage, and then the sky went black. Starless and moonless, the night sky was a dreary, empty thing, desolate and teeming with despair. Lily’s throat worked on a swallow, but her mouth was dry and it got stuck halfway.
