He turned looking at the girl and he could hear her taking deep breaths. “Ohhh… oh… No I do not have my phone and I have severe claustrophobia. I think… I’m not able to breathe.” The girl took deep breaths patting her chest and Ethan instantly walked closer to the girl patting her back.

CATERINA Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. Get it together. Only I can’t hear anything but the roaring of blood in my ears. “Wh-what did you say?” I can barely hear my voice. “Sorry. I’m…” Can’t find the words. Can hardly breathe. I’m going to hyperventilate if I don’t calm down. Deep breaths. I wanted to scream, still coughing I fall off the bench my hands clutched my shirt in the chest area as it felt like it was going to explode soon. "You okay dear?" The person helped me back on to a chair before asking if there was someone I could call, I nodded my head and asked her to check the pocket of my jeans which she did, I asked her to call Caleb and as instructed she did.

My breath came shallow and sharp, each inhale scraping. “Easy.” Kaden’s voice. Right there. Close. His hand was already on my back, solid and grounding, fingers splayed like he was anchoring me to the present by force. “You do not get points for bravery,” he added quietly. “I was not trying to be brave,” I muttered. “I was trying not to drown in my own ribs.” Kael snorted from somewhere nearby. “That checks out.” I forced my breathing to slow. Just listen to my voice, okay? Breathe. Breathe for me.” He takes a deep breath, demonstrating for me, and I find myself mirroring his movements. Slowly but surely, my breathing steadies. The tightness in my chest loosens, and I can finally inhale deeply on my own.

The gasps coming from me sounded horrible and fear made me panic harder, and panicking made it harder to breathe. Strong arms encircled me and held my shoulder, a distant voice speaking very calmly and instructing me to inhale. I was still gasping, my fingers white from fisting too hard while a soothing hand landed on my chest, and I could hear the word, “Breathe.” Being repeated rhythmically and in what felt like hours, cool, fresh air rushed into my lungs and my gasping ceased.

Not trembling like mine. For a fraction of a second, I hesitate. This is the point of no return. Then I place my hand in his. His fingers close around mine. Warm. Firm. Grounding. The contact sends a strange calm through me. He leans slightly closer. From the outside, it probably looks romantic. Intimate. Perfect. But only I hear the quiet murmur meant just for me. “Breathe.” Two syllables. Low. Controlled. My lungs finally obey. I hadn’t realised I’d been holding my breath.

She was hyperventilating. "Breathe, Bella." She couldn't seem to pass air into her lungs. She grabbed her throat. She was choking. On what?! Her body tingled crazily, her hair follicles throbbed and her feet felt like lead. She couldn't breathe, but she felt alive. And that scared the pee out of her. Her eyes darted up to his, silently begging for help. His forehead dropped to hers, "Baby, breathe." He whispered again. Her eyes flared, 'I don't know how!', she would have yelled out if she could. The images cling to the corners of my vision refusing to fade.
