“I’m going to be their Alpha someday. It’s not like I can promote them to Beta or Gamma. We have those families and even though Beta Sergi hasn’t had any pups yet, when he does, his son will be my Beta.”
“That sounds awfully lonely.”
“It can be, but my dad says that’s the price of being an Alpha. It’s the cross we bear.”
“I don’t think it should mean that you don’t have friends though. I’ll be your friend,” she says.
“You will?”
Now she shrugs. “Sure, why not. My dad was a Beta before. He didn’t want to be, but that still makes me a Beta female, so we could be friends, right?”
“I guess so,” I say, wondering what it would be like to have a friend.
