I respond. He nods in agreement and I press play for the episode to continue. Two hours later, we finished season one of Bridgerton and we were discussing our thoughts and if it was better than the book. Blake starts by saying, “In my opinion, the season is better than the book. The book was kind of boring but the season gave us more spice.”

Instead he said, “What are you reading?” She looked up this time. “Why?” she asked. “You’ve read it before,” he said. “The spine is worn.” She glanced down at the book, thumb brushing the edge like she hadn’t noticed that herself. “Persuasion,” she said. “Jane Austen.” He nodded. “Yeah, the one where they almost lose each other.” “You’ve read it?” “My sister did,” he said. “She used to leave it on the kitchen table, I read the first half by accident over about six months of breakfasts.”

She planned to toss the book onto the coffee table, but it slipped from her grasp and fell to the floor. “What are you doing?” Sebastian walked in unannounced, and she flinched. “What are you doing here?” she asked, looking at him with confusion. “Didn’t you say you have a busy day?” “I did.” He lounged next to her and sighed before criticizing her. “It’s all because of you!” He picked up the book. She turned to him. “What? What did I do?” “How was the book?” he asked, looking in her direction. “Fucking nonsense! Enemies to lovers trope with a heartbreaking ending. I won’t read the sequel,”
