My desktop screen glowed quietly in front of me. I tried focusing. Tried pretending I was just another employee working an ordinary job. But every small movement reminded me otherwise. The sting on my skin from Laney’s slap earlier. The missing piece beneath my dress. The memory of Romane’s eyes watching me from that jewellery store. God. I pressed my fingers against my temple tiredly. What was happening to my life? I felt not in control anymore after a very long time. My marriage was cracking apart in silence.
