Somewhere along the way, between last night and this morning, he'd had something brewing in his gut. For whatever reason, he liked her, like really liked her. She was sweet, genuine, sexy as fuck, and broken. That was the one thing he kept coming back to. Even as she tried to put on a brave front, he could see that she was still suffering. She was found by some neighbours who sent her to the hospital and immediately procedures were put in place to send her to foster care.

My mind adds the phrase “not anymore.” Immediately, I answered the call. It's the haunted sound of her cry and the trembling of her lips as she speaks. “I’m broken. I feel totally stupid and hurt right now because Ben just broke up with me. I saw it coming, Denver.” Fuck, the way she mentioned my name with the haunted sounds from her lips.

That kind of desperation would push Alessia exactly where we needed her to be. I replayed the video in my mind, the image of the little girl pale and trembling, her voice weak as she asked for her mother. The doctor had calmed her with soft lies before putting her back to sleep. It was almost poetic in a cruel way. “Father, let’s send this to Alessia,” I said, handing him the phone.
