I hoped it would work. I left with a broken heart, tears streaming down my face as I heard the explosion that signaled his death. As I ran away, my heart shattered into a million pieces. I loved him, and it would be the last time I would ever see him again. All the moments we shared came flooding back to me - all the times we spent together, all the unspoken words. But now, it was all over. My heart was broken, and I could do nothing to fix it. I collapsed and cried all the tears in my body, screaming in anger and frustration. My baby cried with me, and I held him close, knowing that we were alone in the world.

It broke him completely. A raw, broken sound escaped him. He pulled his wrist from her grasp, not with anger, but weary defeat. "Elira," he breathed, trembling. "Don't. Please, don't do this to me. My heart... it can't stop beating hopefully for you. It's a fool. It has always been a fool for you." He ran a hand through his hair. "But I have no bravery left to hope again. No matter the reason, it saddened me too. Guilt-ridden me deep inside. "Punish me," I found myself whispering.

As I continue to helplessly stare after Dmitris’ fading figure, I collapse to my knees-my right knee hitting the wet concrete ground first, then, my left. Pain disperses across the hard balls of my kneecaps, but the foreboding pain of heartbreak that continues to seep into the roots of my heart outweighs any other pain my body is slowly trying to register.
