The footsteps stopped close to him. Jayden opened his eyes a crack and peered around him. It was eerily quiet for a while. Then he saw the creature. It was huge. It had bat-like wings with a single horn in the middle of its head. There was another creature. This one made his skin crawl. The creature was a mass of rotten flesh crawling with worms. It had a skeletal face and two large horns on its head. The odour emanating from the creature was terrible.

As soon as we walk into the restaurant, I hear Citra, Jaiden, and Hawk deep in conversation with Bella, who’s back at the medic site. “Why are all these creatures circling the warehouse? It doesn’t make sense. They’re all loners, more animal than human. Why are they trying to get in with the Riding Hoods?” Jaiden asks. “There’s got to be a connection between them,” Bella says. “What kind of creatures have you seen?” Hawk starts listing. “Pixies. A rougarou. Several Loa. Kelpies. A goblin.” He trails off, eyes going wide.

Deciding that pulling the identity of the beast from Bog would probably be easier than pulling his own identity from him, Brandon changed tactics. “The creature wasn’t a werewolf. Creatures such as dragons and unicorns each were hunted to extinction for the magical healing qualities.

Some movement caught my eye and turning I saw a brownie crawling from a small hole and lifting a knife out to me. "It will finish him for good," the little creature said nervously. I nodded and shifted into my Lycan and wrapped my fingers around the hilt of the six-inch golden-blade knife. "Good luck, miss," the brownie said as it brushed the dust and dirt off itself. I nodded and then asked where the others were. Her eyes glanced down at Lykaios getting closer. "I believe they retired for the evening, please turn around," she said softly and covered her eyes. I whipped around holding up the knife and the bastard laughed at me.

Sounds of screams and rushing footsteps reverberate below us. Fallon grips me tightly and releases his wings to fly up, but several creatures appear around us before we can take off. I look cautiously as the creatures raise their sharp-clawed paws. They look like a mixture between a cat, a bird, and a gargoyle. Their bodies are grey, and their back legs look like they belong to gigantic birds.

He nodded slowly, then laid the tile down next to the others. I looked at it. My unease grew, because it looked like a bullfrog crossed with a man. Oddly enough, it looked like . . . The creature from the Black Lagoon. “The ‘Other’ is Chiao, the Water Demon. According to legend he capsized boats, devoured men, and ravished women. He was . . . different from the Sacred Four.” I cleared my suddenly dry and tight throat. “How?” Mr. Trung tipped his head. “The Four exact a price for attempting to reach the Gateway, but they are sacred, honorable, bearing your essence away to be judged accordingly. Chiao is an Abomination. It consumes your very essence, making you part of it for all eternity.”
