A gust of wind swept past, and the dandelions disintegrated and began to drift toward the Camford River, like a late snowfall. I held the crystal dome and walked back to my office. Behind me, I heard the sound of David giggling. I did not look back, but I knew that there was a figure standing at a safe distance and watching me. Some stories did not have to have a happy ending. Like the ripples on the Karnell River, there were some things that could never come together again.

Gold blazed in his eyes, flaring against the blue. The ember surged, not devouring or demanding, but answering. Our fires braided together, his and mine, spilling into the hollow as one. The flames roared, not like a barrier but like a living thing, a storm of gold sweeping across the ridge mouth. Roots screamed voicelessly, blackening, twisting back into the night. The shadows recoiled, shredded by light.

His wide, frightened eyes were locked on me. "I didn't mean to upset you! Please don't hit me." Even as he said it, his body trembled uncontrollably. He forced himself to lean his head toward me, as if he was bracing for punishment. "What are you talking about? Why would I ever hit you?" Then it clicked. Blazewing had also been reborn. "Did Raven—" "N-no, don't mention her!" His whole body spasmed as if I'd stabbed him, and he curled into himself, eyes streaming blood.

I stuttered. "Girl. I could feel that tension from across the room. It's fine, it's none of my business, but I'm here now Wren. You know you could come to me if it ever gets rough. I'll always be here." He took my hands in his, caressing. Assuring. This is crazy. This is tempting. The beep of my phone brought me out of my spiralling emotions. The elder took it and handed it to me first. He took my hand, stretching it and then urged me to cut my palms. I shut my eyes tightly and did it. He placed it over the fire and burning began to pain me immensely, still I couldn't take my hands off. I had to say my promise. It had been burned in my subconscious and so I said it easily. I wanted my hands to be taken off the fire immediately, the pain had been too much.

The pause before the word lands heavy. I nod. Brisk. Busy myself rearranging sugar packets like they matter. “Good,” I say. “That’s good.” Silence stretches again, taut and loaded. I'd never get around to seeing my face and not thinking about her, not seeing her. The girl in the mirror stared back, gaze unwavering. The left side of my face was totally affected by the fire. It was a 3 degree burns though lots of surgeries over the years have reduced the scars greatly and now, it was a little over 1 degree burns.
