Fleur turned to Elian. “The novels come from this?”
“Everything comes from this,” Elian said. “The novels, the foundation, the letters, the conversations. You can’t write about staying from anywhere other than where you’re staying.”
“And the third novel?”
“Still growing,” Elian said with a small smile. “Underground. Like garlic in winter.”
Fleur looked around the home, its quiet layers of meaning, the evidence of lives faithfully lived. “I’ve filmed many people in many places,” she said finally. “This is the most real place I’ve been.”
