Carmenta dropped her reins instantly, riding forward without thinking. She called out—something calm, something soft—and leaned forward, reaching for Monica’s horse. Her own horse neighed in protest, but she kept control. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked. Monica’s horse calmed, panting and wild-eyed, but no longer bucking. Everyone let out the breath they were holding. But Monica was crying. “She scared it! She galloped too close and scared it!”
