Caleb was the guy smuggling in candy bars that tasted like forbidden heaven, telling ghost stories that caused the little ones to shiver in fear and flirting like it was his job.

Big on ‘community development.’” He makes air quotes, rolling his eyes. The screen changes again. Images flash one after the other. Charity galas. Ribbon cuttings. Pictures of Victor smiling with children, shaking hands with politicians, volunteering at the local orphanage. He’s perfect. Too perfect. “But beneath all that,” Caleb continues, voice bright with something that borders on excitement, “we have the real story.”

“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Caleb, happy birthday to you!” His family came into the room with a very large and very unnecessary cake. Caleb sat in the living room trying to catch up on the work the chief of staff had given him for the conference he was going to in Los Angeles. He was a third-year resident at the community’s hospital. He had worked his ass off in college to finish early so he could apply to med school at Yale. And it paid off. He would only be a second year now if he hadn’t.

I’m seventeen years old, and I’m a senior in high school.” After a brief pause, he added, “Not studying.” “Not studying?” Natalie raised her brows and looked at him coldly. “Then what do you do all day if you don’t study. Go to internet cafés every day?”
