His jaw flexed. “Don’t.”
He ended the call without waiting for a reply.
For a moment, he remained standing there, phone still in his hand, breathing measured, and controlled. Then he set it down carefully, as if any sudden movement might crack the composure he’d rebuilt piece by piece.
He turned toward the window, gaze unfocused, the city beyond blurred and distant. Whatever lingered from the call sat heavy in his chest, unwelcome and unresolved.
When he finally returned to his work, the irritation from earlier hadn’t faded. It had sharpened to a whole new degree instead.
