Let's hope we never meet again." I turned and left. The breeze felt like spring, but it still carried shedding leaves from their branches to the ground. As the leaves twirled down, they landed softly, only to be crushed underfoot with a gentle crunch. However, no one seemed to notice or care.

Maybe even peaceful. The calm before the storm.

Jonah's hand was icy. “The sea is calm today,” Clarkson said, his voice softer than the waves outside. It was an offering. A piece of their shared peace, held out like a talisman. Jonah’s eyes flickered to the window, then back to his plate. “It’s the calm before the storm,” he murmured. “The air feels… heavy. Waiting.” The words hung between them. They weren’t talking about the weather. Clarkson squeezed his hand. “We’ve weathered storms before.”

I stilled my thoughts, taking a deep breath, I switched off my bed lights and closed my eyes, preparing myself for tomorrow. All the time, being calm, the type of calm before the storm.

You aren’t helping. I shut my eyes for a brief moment before, curbing the storm that was slowly brewing inside of me. Going berserk wasn’t going to do any of us any favor. I needed to be as calm as the ocean waters before the storm. After mentally talking myself into not burning down the entire frat house with the two of them inside, I snapped my eyes open, “I am fine,” I said through clenched teeth then tore further into the room and headed straight for my study area. I didn’t even bother catching their reactions before I switched on the study lamp, took my Kindle and a small notepad, then tried to continue reading the book I was reading.

I ranted, watching the two burly men look at me as if I was throwing tantrums. “Let us hope your cup does not run over by the time we get home, we would be able to save you from any harm, but never this. I don’t think facing a new mom’s wrath is something I really want to do. By the way, isn't it suspicious that everything is calm, I find it very weird. This is something I would call the calm before the storm.” Big Drive pointed out, I bobbed my head in agreement, momentarily forgetting about the pot of soup waiting for me.

“Yeah, well, tell that to whatever’s running this storm!” Callan released a burst of light, their presence radiating calm amid the chaos. “Stay together. The storm is trying to divide us. Do not let it succeed.” They reached the heart of the storm, where the air was so dense with energy it felt like wading through water. At the center stood a massive obelisk, its surface shimmering with dark energy that pulsed in rhythm with the storm. Tendrils of lightning coiled around it, feeding into the swirling clouds above.

Even Mama musters a tired smile, one that doesn’t quite reaches her eyes but still feels like an embrace. Too normal. Much too normal. It claws at me, this confusion and I was ready for war, and they handed me peace. But peace with our family? I don’t trust it. It’s always the calm before the storm, and with us, the storm always comes, one way or another.
