Dara's POV I felt the silence before I understood it. It came over the clearing like something dropping — three hundred wolves going still all at once, breath held, the night itself seeming to lean in and wait. I have never gotten used to silence like that. It has weight. It sits on your chest until breathing becomes a decision instead of a reflex.

I laugh— Sharp— Pained— “Great timing.” Another wave hits me This one feels like the end. Or the beginning. Or both. “I can’t hold it anymore,” I whisper. “You don’t have to,” she replies. “Let it come.” The pressure builds then— Everything stops. Silence. Total. Absolute. Even the air freezes. Even the world pauses. And for one second— I feel nothing. No pain. No fear. No weight. Just— Stillness. Then— A heartbeat.

The ground beneath my feet trembled faintly as my energy flared, golden light pulsing outward in uneven waves. For a second Just one second The connection shifted. I felt it. A flicker. A ripple through the others. A hint of something breaking through. But then Silence. Not normal silence. Not the absence of sound. This was… something else. Heavy. Pressing. Alive. My breath caught. Because the silence didn’t just surround me. It answered me. No voice. No words. There were only several moments in life when silence make no sense. The eerie feeling could remind us one of being alive. Of hearing emotions through the tranquility, the serenity that weighs the words down, suppressing our sentiments. I could hear the silence now, could feel the waves of memories and melodies of the way his breath seized now and then whilst he pondered something. Nothing. Everything. All at once, I could feel his emotions yet I was failing to reach him. "Sadie."

“ Meara!” The whispers started again, soft but notable. I tensed, my eyes snapping open. I scanned the field, but there was no one in sight. The sound seemed to come from the tree itself, from the rustling of its leaves. I pressed my palms against the rough bark and closed my eyes, focusing on the whispers. " Come... find... me..." The words were faint but distinct. My heart raced. Was I losing my mind, or was there something more to these whispers? I stood up, brushing the dirt off my jeans, and took a few steps back. The whispers grew louder, more insistent.

My colleagues should already be here; the usual sound of conversations and movement should fill the space, but the silence is almost deafening. As I walk toward the entrance, a shiver runs down my spine, setting my nerves on edge. With each step through the empty hall, the sense that something is deeply wrong intensifies. Shadows stretch along the walls, seeming to move with me, as if they’re watching, lurking. The silence is so thick it feels oppressive, and the absence of any human sound makes my heart beat faster, the pulse blending with the soft echo of my footsteps on the floor.

Her voice suddenly grew hazy in his ears, his eyes unable to stray from Dylan's gaze in his direction. His legs couldn't take a step forward or move an inch as he stared back with mind going blank before he could get a full grasp of the situation. The voices screaming something he couldn't make out slowly got blocked out as he got swallowed by the darkness inside him. Not a sound, not a sight, just the emptiness swallowing him whole and leaving him with nothing but the repeated image of Dylan's core fizzling out for the next few minutes. "...le." "Kyle!" The echo infiltrated his head.

By the time I’m standing directly in front of her, her heartbeat is completely gone. Nothing. The silence is unnerving. My senses, so finely tuned that I can usually hear a pin drop in a crowded room, suddenly fail me. I can’t hear the steady rhythm of her heart, nor can I feel the hum of her emotions that should be radiating off her. It’s as if something invisible is blocking me, shielding her from me entirely. What the hell is this?

And oh my God, you don’t understand how insane that was, because one second I was lying here, choking on the wet slap-slap-slap of bodies colliding and her screaming his name like she was being baptized in fire, and the next it just vanished. Like someone ripped the plug out of the universe. And you’d think silence would be a relief after what I just heard, but no, it was worse, because silence means something is waiting, silence means someone is watching, silence means something is about to crawl out of the dark and eat me alive.
