Casper pulled out a small, crinkly candy wrapped in iridescent, rainbow-colored cellophane. He carefully unwrapped it to reveal a translucent, gem-like lozenge inside.
Claire stared at it, her breath catching for a different reason. A wave of pure nostalgia, sweet and sharp, cut through the numbness.
That specific candy… with that exact, garishly shiny wrapper… It was wildly popular at her high school. She'd loved them but could rarely have them because of her terrible sweet tooth and constant warnings from the dentist.
