For the first time, he didn’t seem like the untouchable captain everyone feared. I don’t know what made me walk over. “You okay?” I asked quietly. He lifted his head slowly. Those icy blue eyes met mine, and for a second he looked surprised I was still there. I shifted on my feet. “Earlier… when that guy got hurt. You got to him really fast. Thanks for helping him. Most captains would’ve waited for the coach.” Cole stared at me for a long moment, like my words didn’t make sense to him. “You noticed that?”

I asked, and she offered me an awkward smile. “Of course she was okay. What chick wouldn’t be, getting to be with the football captain.” Kaiden said with a cockiness that made me want to punch him again. “Did we ask you?” I heard Arlo demand as another punch was thrown, and Presley’s eyes widened as I focused upon her delicate features. I knew that Arlo would happily deal with the piece of shit that was the football captain. We were more than willing to protect our friends, and Presley was one of them.

It feels like a heavy and painful weight is sitting on my chest. "I'm here. Hey I'm here Let me shift all of this, bandage you up and send you back, okay. It will be just fine, okay" "Not me. Don't save me; go get captain. I'm stuck." I look over at Captain, who is out cold with a tonne of debris all over him.

Looking at his messages, all wagging tail like a big dog, I thought back to how he'd been all afternoon, eyes on nothing but the puck. The guy wasn't actually mean-hearted. He was just completely oblivious to how people worked. I typed out a line. "I watched your old game tapes. Everyone's just recklessly aggressive, dropping the gloves at the drop of a hat, all chasing the spotlight, and you play like a bunch of strangers. It doesn't matter how good the tactics are if the captain doesn't give a damn about his own teammates and lets bullying slide right under his nose." He fired back a shocked reaction sticker in a heartbeat.

That cocky part of me wanted to wink or flash a grin but I was too locked in. I adjusted my gloves, rolling my shoulders as I skated to the faceoff circle. Carter was already there with the team, warming up. He was crouched in a squat, probably trying to loosen his hips as he scraped his stick over the ice. Captain fucking America. Through the helmet, I could see his jaw was tight and blue eyes narrowed in concentration. I fucking hated him. And I wanted him too.

Awkward was putting it mildly. “I know,” I replied with a dry laugh. At least I wasn’t the only one who thought this was bizarre. He gave a small smile, then met my gaze. “I’m Will Drew Carlton. My friends call me Drew but my family call me Will.” Oh. Will. That made two people I knew with the same name. “Blair Thorn,” I said, keeping my arms folded since he didn’t offer a handshake. He nodded once and repeated my name under his breath, almost like he was committing it to memory. Then he shifted his weight and looked around. “Sooo… I think we should probably talk about what just happened.”

Did I even care? “You don’t remember? I’m Marc—the Captain and Quarterback of the top-ranked football team in the whole state!” he shouted like it was supposed to impress me. “I’m literally the most desirable guy here!” Why are the hot ones always so damn annoying? “Look, I like my hookups fast and forgettable. I don’t need a migraine after. So do us both a favor—stuff that lazy pole back in your pants and get lost,” I said coldly. “Frankly, I don’t even know how someone like you plays football. You’re that lazy.”

He was supposed to be my teammate, my responsibility as captain, but right now, looking down at him, all I wanted to do was pin him against the glass and wipe that arrogant smile right off his face. "You're in my way, Captain," Jules panted, his voice dripping with that fake innocence that always made my jaw tick. He pushed his helmet up, running a gloved hand through his sweat-dampened hair, completely unfazed by the fact that I was towering over him. "Unless you're planning to ask me out, you need to back off." I leaned in closer, letting him feel the sheer size of me, letting him smell the sweat and the cold air clinging to my jersey.

Instead I felt like shit, like a total failure. “It’s okay guys, you don’t need to do this” I said. “Do what?” Xyla replied, pretending like she knew nothing of what I was talking about. Just at that time, the teacher walked in and classes began, I couldn’t stop glancing over at Emory, he had his head down and barely paid attention to the class. Ofcourse no one bothered him, he was the captain of the hockey team and his grades were just enough to keep him in the team.
