He sat with his eyes on the floor and the posture of someone who was genuinely not well, which was true enough that the rival captain didn’t need to interpret it. Another moment of silence. Then the captain stood and moved toward the door. He reached it and put his hand on the frame and stopped with his back to us. He turned his head slightly, not fully back, the way you turn when you have one more thing to say and you’re going to say it without making it a conversation. “I hope that would help on the ice,” he said. Then he left. The door closed and we sat with what had just happened for a moment before either of us reached the next thing.
