She was thirty-five years old this year and she knew, if she persisted she could one day become a personal assistant like Jared. Who even had his own house and could go on holidays and vacations if he pleased. She wouldn't let anybody steal the dream she worked so hard for. When Alvira was a caregiver she hadn't seen her as a threat to her, as she was not. A caregiver's job was temporal. If the patient recovers she loses her job, if the patient was dissatisfied she still loses her job. In the end, she would have to leave.

My stomach twists with hunger and resentment — an ugly, restless mix.
